Landmark Successes: A Decade of Global Firsts in Fertility Treatments and Genetic Screening (2012)

In 2012, reproductive medicine saw multiple world and regional firsts. Key achievements included the world’s first successful pregnancy using freeze-thawed sperm, eggs, and embryos, and the first successful birth for a patient with Mullerian Dysgenesis. Additionally, breakthroughs were made in genetic screening with the world’s first successful pregnancy after PGD-CGH diagnosis of a chromosome inversion, and Asia and Australia’s first following PGD-CGH for chromosome translocation. These advances were underpinned by the pioneering application of Comparative Genomic Hybridisation (CGH) for testing embryos with complex chromosomal abnormalities.

2013: Global and Southeast Asian Milestones in Embryo Viability and Cryopreservation

In 2013, reproductive medicine saw significant strides, notably with the world’s first demonstration of similar euploidy rates across 0PN, 1PN, and 2PN embryos using MaCGH analysis, a crucial development for embryo selection. Southeast Asia also marked two key achievements, boasting a 100% survival rate for both frozen blastocysts and frozen embryos, significantly boosting the region’s fertility treatment success rates and showcasing advancements in cryopreservation techniques.

2014 Reproductive Innovations: Advancements in Embryo Selection, Fertilization Techniques, and Cryopreservation

2014 Reproductive Innovations: Advancements in Embryo Selection, Fertilization Techniques, and Cryopreservation

In 2014, significant advancements were made in reproductive technology, highlighted by a world-first demonstration that conventional IVF results in lower aneuploidy rates (chromosomal abnormalities) compared to ICSI-derived embryos. This year also saw Southeast Asia’s first use of PIEZO-ICSI, a new technique aiming for healthier ICSI embryos. Concurrently, Malaysia reported its first pregnancy following Time-Lapse Embryoscopy, a non-invasive embryo monitoring method. Complementing these developments, research also demonstrated the safety of fertilization without ICSI for embryos undergoing MaCGH, providing more options for genetic screening without compromising embryo viability.

2015 Milestones: Advancements in PGD, Embryo Selection, and Cryopreservation

2015 Milestones: Advancements in PGD, Embryo Selection, and Cryopreservation

The year 2015 marked a pivotal period in reproductive medicine with several world, regional, and national firsts. A global breakthrough saw the first successful live birth from a frozen 1PN (unipronuclear) embryo following PGD-MaCGH analysis, fundamentally changing how these embryos are viewed, as it was also demonstrated that 1PN embryos can be normal and should not be discarded. Asia and Australia achieved their first successful pregnancies using the world’s only proven sperm sorting technology, both after PGD-MaCGH analysis and following ICSI. In Malaysia, the first successful pregnancy for Alpha Thalassemia was achieved using PGD with concurrent PGS from a single biopsy. Further expanding the possibilities, a successful twin pregnancy was also demonstrated after transferring a 2PN and 0PN embryo post PGD-MaCGH analysis, highlighting the continued advancement in viable embryo selection.
